Amazing Vintage Toy Camper Collection

Today Robert Powley tells us about his vintage toy camper collection, and how he got interested in the world of "glamping." Read his story below, and watch the Mickey Mouse cartoon that inspired his collection!

As a child in the 1950s I first became interested in travel trailers when I saw the Disney cartoon "Mickey's Trailer" which is now on YouTube and just as great as ever. I loved how Mickey could push buttons that would automatically change the rooms. (Watch the original Mickey Mouse cartoon right here!)

My parents bought me a toy tin trailer that opened up to store the car inside. It had a door that opened and an awning that opened. I think it was the same as this one.

Of course I wanted to live in one just like it but to this date have never had an actual trailer. As a teen I had the Plasticville and Matchbox trailers in my toy car collections. Then maybe ten years ago I decided to collect the old Japanese made tin trailers that were mass produced in the 50s and 60s. eBay is the best place to find them, though I bought the one above when it was advertised in a toy trader magazine.

Here are some pictures of the trailers I own and the displays I made of them.

I also have been a sculptor for the past 30 years and made the three trailers below plus the people pictured with the purple one.

Next are other trailers I own with people I made

I was finally able to buy on eBay a sculpted "Mickeys Trailer" seen below.

All I can advise other people who want to collect toy trailers is to be patient when looking on eBay. There are many up for bid but these days there seems to be so many more people bidding on them which drives the prices up.

Tybee Island Rally Recap

The vintage trailer group “Tin Can Tourists” hosted a rally last weekend, April  23-26 2015, on Tybee Island, right outside of Savannah, Georgia. We’re not members of the “Tin Can Tourists” (yet!) but you can get info on becoming a member and details about their future rallies on their website at http://tincantourists.com/

Glamping Nation friend, and guest photographer, Vicki Vaden attended the event with her 1962 Shasta Compact named Maggie Mae, which she says is “10 foot of happy!”

Vicki’s journey down the glamping road took a little time to get up and going, but she’s a pro glamper now!

She told us, “I searched for her for a couple years, and was very excited to find her in Lexington, Kentucky. Several months of sprucing her up structurally... and then the fun part of flooring, curtains, and picking up vintage accessories. Several trial run campouts, and a couple rallies within a few hours from home... That brings us to Tybee. Last April I heard about it from friends. TYBEE! I have always loved the historical charm of Savannah, Ga... heard great things about Tybee, AND there was a vintage rally?? I reserved the site a year in advance!!! I live in northwestern Ohio (Lima)... but I KNEW the 1700 mile round trip was going to be worth it-and it was!”

Vicki shared her Favorite’s List from the weekend with us below – we can’t wait to get to Tybee and check out all her suggestions:

Tybee Rally Favorites:
   - Seeing so many (85) campers in one place, and sharing ideas!
   - Meeting new people, and seeing others again from previous rallies!
   - So many options for things to do on Tybee. We rented a golf cart for a day and were able to tour the entire island with no parking  meters.

Great location:  Only a few miles from Savannah... The Historical Trolley Tour is a MUST! http://www.trolleytours.com/Savannah/

Best food (and outdoor atmosphere): The Crab Shack!!http://www.thecrabshack.com/

Best Perk: Dog Friendly! Since we were traveling with our dog, I was sooo pleased that not only the campground was pet friendly. but also all outdoor  seating restaurants, on Tybee and Savannah... including the trolley. and all of the shops on the Riverfront in Savannah, and The Crab Shack, and all of the shops in uptown Tybee.

Campground: The Tybee Rally was held at River’s End Campground on Tybee Island, and Vicki really liked it there. For more info you can check out their website here: http://www.riversendcampground.com/

Photo Credits to Vicki Vaden. Thank you Vicki! Next year we will have to join you in Tybee... this looks like it was a blast!
